Mexico. The Comisión Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Cofetel) decided, in a meeting held on January 25, not to approve the proposal to create a third free-to-air television network in the country to join the two existing large companies, Televisa and TV Azteca.
This is in contrast to the results of a nationwide survey in which the vast majority of users said they supported such an initiative.
According to the official communication of the Commission, it was resolved "to postpone the vote on the project and that it not be integrated into the agenda of future sessions until considering that elements that are outside the scope of competence of the commission have been addressed."
Therefore, a clear date was not defined for the issue to be analyzed again, which leaves for the moment closed the door to the entry of a new competitor into the market. According to local media, the decision came amid pressure from the country's two major television networks.
