Latin America. ARRI presented a complete large format system that meets, and exceeds, modern production requirements providing unprecedented creative freedom.
Based on a large-format 4K version of the Alexa sensor, the system comprises the Alexa LF camera, ARRI Signature Prime lenses, LPL lens mount and PL-to-LPL adapter. It is also compatible with existing lenses, accessories and workflows.
Alexa LF Camera
With a slightly larger sensor than a full frame, the ALEXA LF captures native 4K with the best ARRI image quality. Filmmakers will be able to explore the aesthetics of a large format while maintaining the sensor's natural colorimetry, pleasing skin tones, and a proven fit for HDR and WCG workflows. Versatile recording formats including efficient ProRes and ARRIRAW uncompressed and decrypted up to 150 fps provide total flexibility.
ARRI Signature Prime Lenses
Accompanying the ALEXA LF camera are 16 large-format ARRI Signature Prime lenses ranging from 12mm to 280mm and are equipped with ARRI's LPL mount. While representing what is cutting-edge optical precision, the ARRI Signature Prime delivers organic and emotionally appealing images and delicately softens and textures the large format. A fast T-stop of T1.8 favors shallow depth of field and the gentle drop of focus highlights the presence of subjects in the frame.
New LPL lens mount
Optimized for large format sensors, the new LPL lens mount features a larger diameter and shorter focal length, allowing ARRI Signature Primes and all future large format lenses to be smaller and lighter, with fast T-stop and pleasant bokeh; a combination of features that would not be possible with the PL lens mount. The LPL mount will also be available for other ARRI cameras and may be manufactured by other lens and camera manufacturers.
Compatibility with lenses, accessories and previous workflows
Although the camera, lens mount and lenses are new, a fundamental pillar of the design of this system is full compatibility with existing PL mounts and ALEXA camera accessories. The PL-to-LPL adapter offers compatibility with all previous PL mount lenses, whether Super 35 or full frame. The adapter attaches securely to the tool-free LPL mount, allowing teams to quickly switch from PL lenses to on-set LPL lenses and offering cinematographers unlimited lens choice.
The first ALEXA LF cameras will be shipping by the end of March 2018. The initial set of four Signature Prime lenses (35mm, 47mm, 75mm and 125mm) will ship in early June 2018. The remaining lenses will be available over the course of the year.
