Colombia. On the first of September, the open television service in digital terrestrial technology in Bogotá and Medellín, under the DVB-T standard provided by the private channels RCN and Caracol, since 2010, stopped broadcasting.
That is, those who had been enjoying digital television in Bogotá and Medellin, through televisions or set-top boxes with DVB-T standard since the first of September no longer receive this signal.
In development of the project "Plan for the implementation of the Digital Terrestrial Television service in Colombia" initially in 2010 the DVB-T Digital Terrestrial Television standard was adopted for Colombia, with a transition period from analog to digital system until December 31, 2019. Later in 2011, for the greater benefit of citizens, the standard was updated to DVB-T2.
In order to guarantee population coverage and guarantee the service, it was agreed that the concessionaires of National Private Television and the National Public Operator RTVC should continue with the provision of the service in DVB-T system, for a period of three years counted from the day that the concessionaires and the National Public Operator RTVC begin the simultaneous broadcast of the signal in both systems.
According to the above, until August 31, 2015, private operators had the obligation to transmit the digital signal in DVB-T standard, therefore, clarified Ángela María Mora Soto, who had been enjoying digital television through televisions with this technology will be able to receive the signal of the DVB-T2 standard by installing a decoder and indoor or outdoor UHF antenna, as the case may be.
Additionally, until that same day there was a deadline for operators to release the frequencies that correspond to the so-called Digital Dividend as a result of the regulation of the National Spectrum Agency and the Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies, MinTIC, on this issue.
