International. For the first time in television history, a series that was produced and webcast as House of Cards was nominated for Emmy Television Awards.
This series, which was produced by Netflix, was nominated in nine categories including Best Drama, Best Actor (Kevin Spacey), Best Actress (Robin Wright), Best Director (David Fincher) and Best Music (Jeff Beal).
Netflix's Head of Content, Ted Sarandos, said in a statement that "We are overwhelmed with 14 nominations and honored by a warm welcome that confirms what we've always believed, that great television is great television no matter where, when and how it's enjoyed."
In this way, Netflix finds an answer to continue with its purpose and go from being a content distribution platform to a producer of its own works, as it has been doing in recent years and with a very good response from its subscribers.
Some of the series produced by Netflix are "House of Cards" and "Hemlock Grove", "Lilyhammer" (2012) and the most recent "Orange Is The New Black". In addition, companies like Amazon and Hulu are also looking to generate content for the web.
Since 2008 it had been predicted that a situation like these could arise when the United States Television Academy, organizer of the Emmy Awards, changed the rules to allow the inclusion of programs born on the web.
Without a doubt, this is another demonstration of where television is going and that more and more the gap between traditional television and new forms of consumption will be smaller, benefiting the viewer, but is the industry prepared?
