Colombia. The Comisión Nacional de Televisión, the television regulator in Colombia, announced that it approved the update of the digital television model adopted three years ago, from DVB-T to DVB-T2.
The entity reported that the decision was taken after having raised the consultation to all the actors of the television industry, the general public and to analyze studies on the feasibility and feasibility in the migration of the digital television system.
The results of the comparative technical tests between DVB-T and DVB-T2 made by the CNTV, verified that it is possible to transport on average 42% more payload with the DVB-t2 system compared to the DVB-T. Thus, television operators will have greater capacity to transport content, taking advantage of them in better definition quality, HD and / or expanding the number of programs.
Jaime Andrés Estrada, director of the CNTV, explained that with the update of the standard, Colombians will be able to have a greater number of television services, mainly in high definition and 3D, with better image, better quality, more content, more interactive services, and will have the possibility of integrating them with other telecommunications services.
The DVB-T2 system has been implemented in the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden and Finland, Singapore, Kenya, India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Angola, Austria, Botswana, Czech Republic, Congo, Madagascar, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine, have adopted it.
What the CNTV does not make clear is what will happen to the investments made by private and regional television channels that have advanced technology change under the DVB-T model, as well as companies that have invested in creating encoders and citizens who have bought televisions under this model.
