Latin America. Along with the culmination of the second year of existence of 5G networks, wireless industry leaders are already exploring the path to future post-5G wireless networks.
5G Americas, the wireless industry association and the voice of 5G and LTE for the Americas, announced the publication of the white paper Mobile Communications Beyond 2020 – The Evolution of 5G Towards Next G, which details this global work of several academic and industry organizations and presents potential use cases and technologies essential to the evolution of 5G towards the "Next G".
While 5G is still in the early stages of its life cycle, it continues to improve through continuous updates that come from the hand of versions of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). These improvements to networks, architecture, technologies and standards will continue to be in version 17 of the 3GPP and later. However, the requirements for the next generation of mobile wireless technology are expected to be outlined in the next update of International Mobile Telecommunications 2030 (IMT-2030) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Early thought leaders regarding next-generation wireless use cases may include scenarios involving tactile or haptic communications, use of high-resolution terahertz spectrum for imaging and sensors, cyber-physical manufacturing systems, and applications optimized for public safety and national security.
This white paper from 5G Americas covers the three main topics:
- An overview of activities beyond 5G both in North America and globally
- How communications will change after the 2020s, including several use cases
- How North America Can Establish and Maintain Technological Leadership in Future Communications Standards
