Brazil. The Forum of the Brazilian Digital Terrestrial Television System, SBTVD Forum, opened an international public call to receive proposals for solutions for a new generation of free-to-air TV to be adopted in Brazil, TV 3.0.
According to Luiz Fausto, coordinator of the Technical Module of the SBTVD Forum, proposals for candidate technologies for TV 3.0 can come from universities and research centers, private companies that develop technologies related to television, as well as entities that standardize information technologies. Digital television (e.g. ISDB-T, ATSC and DVB).
"When considering the development of the next generation of television in Brazil, the SBTVD Forum defined the expected requirements of the technologies to be adopted (use cases and corresponding minimum technical specifications) and the procedures for testing and evaluating candidate technologies. Thus, it opened an international public call, the aforementioned Call for Proposals, so that any interested organization can contribute proposals, which will be evaluated from the technical, market and intellectual property point of view, in order to select the most appropriate technologies, "explains the expert.
According to the entity, after receiving, testing and analyzing the proposals, the SBTVD Forum will recommend to the Brazilian Government the appropriate technologies for TV 3.0. Once selected, it is estimated that the development of technical standards will take place in 2022.
Benefits of TV 3.0
TV 3.0 will be a disruptive system. The audiovisual quality offered to viewers will be raised to a new level, with UHD video and immersive and customizable audio.
"It will offer a new, fully application-based media consumption experience with complete and transparent integration of over-the-air content with Internet-streamed content," Fausto said.
One of the requirements considered to integrate TV 3.0 is the "reuse-1" technique. Considered one of the pillars of TV 3.0, it allows the transmission of different programs in each location, using the same physical channel. In this way, it allows the transmission of content aimed at each area, optimizing the use of the spectrum.
In addition, the "reuse-1" technique allows: the expansion of coverage using a single channel; greater resilience and robustness of the network against interference; simultaneous and independent use of the 37 UHF channels and 7 VHF channels in all locations; and reception with internal antennas, which simplify the capture of the TV signal. In the future, antennas can be integrated with TVs, for an even more plug and play experience.
Until November 30, (SBTVD Forum) will receive proposals for technological solutions for TV 3.0. The call for proposals is available on the entity's website at: https://forumsbtvd.org.br/tv3_0/
