Peru. According to information sent by the operating companies to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, at the end of 2019 there were 22,766 base stations (towers where antennas are placed) throughout Peru. However, it is estimated that approximately 14,000 more are needed to optimize telecommunications services in the country.
Studies also estimate that, by 2021, 36,500 stations will be required to achieve coverage of more and better services for Peruvians. "Peru needs more antennas to increase connectivity in Peru," said the director of Communications Inspections and Sanctions, Patricia Díaz, during the virtual talk "Breaking myths, good vibe antennas", organized by the MTC.
There are no 5G antennas in Peru
The engineer reported that there are no 5G antennas in the country and that much less these structures are related to covid-19; so he stressed the importance of banishing the myths regarding antennas, which allow improving the coverage and development of the country.
"Enough of the myths that telecommunications antennas give cancer or diseases. Even that these have to do with the coronavirus pandemic. There is no scientific research that supports in any way that the antennas have any relationship with cancer, coronavirus or any other disease," said Patricia Díaz.
Constant measurements
In the last five years, the MTC made more than 23,500 measurements of the radiations of telecommunications antennas, nationwide, known as Non-Ionizing Radiation (NIR), with the aim of ensuring that telecommunications services comply with the standards established by Peruvian and international regulations.
"In this way, there is absolute certainty that all antennas, at the national level, do not exceed the limits allowed at the international level. They are even in a much lower range than legally established," Diaz said.
It should be noted that the authorizations for the installation of infrastructure necessary for the provision of public telecommunications services are procedures of competence of the municipalities, who have the obligation to carry out subsequent control actions regarding the requirements for obtaining said permits.
