Peru. With the aim of achieving access to more telecommunications services based on new technologies in the most vulnerable and remote areas of the country, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, promoted during 2019 the reorganization of the radio spectrum and the public tenders of the frequency bands.
Proof of this are the two tenders that are currently in ProInversión, which will allow greater investment commitments in the most remote areas of the country, such as the Amazon and the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM).
The winner of these contests is expected to implement, at a minimum, mobile services with 4G technology or higher.
"The MTC has been very clear in pointing out that frequencies should be assigned by public tender, prioritizing coverage and expansion of services, without a desire to collect," said Deputy Minister of Communications Virginia Nakagawa.
The tenders currently in ProInversión make a total of 90 MHz of radio spectrum, distributed in the 1.7/2.1 GHz extended band (60 MHz) and in the 2.3 GHz band (30 MHz).
More contests
"Having an orderly market with predictability makes it attractive for more companies to be encouraged to invest in the country, generating greater competition for the benefit of Peruvians," said Deputy Minister Nakagawa.
For this reason, the MTC is working on a second frequency auction package, which groups the radio spectrum released from the rearrangement of the 2.5 GHz (40 MHz) and 2.3 GHz (30 MHz) bands, as well as the new spectrum identified in the 3.5 GHz band (at least 200 MHz), for 5G technology.
The second largest radio spectrum auction in the Americas region is also being prepared. It is a large package of around 1,300 MHz, made up of 26 GHz frequencies. In this way, the MTC reaffirms its commitment to bring more Peruvians closer to technologies at their service.
