Chile. Free-to-air television channels have accelerated their migration process from analog to digital signal, especially regional concessionaires. On the other hand, national channels are more backward, but have prioritized migration in regional capitals, which are areas with larger populations.
"The continuous modernization of the National Television Council has allowed us to give a faster pace to both the process of migration to Digital Television and the delivery of new concessions," said the president of the National Television Council, Catalina Parot.
"Digital Television is one of the greatest technological transformations that our country is experiencing and the faster we advance, the more Chileans will benefit from this development, which implies more competition, more content, more diversity in the television offer, better image and sound quality, among other advantages," he said.
In the country there are a total of 511 analog concessions that will migrate (without antenna bottom) to digital. Of that number, 373 concessions (73%) are pending, but advanced in their process, and another 128 (27%) completed their migration process.
National channels hold 396 of these concessions. Of these, 137 (35%) have a technical project for the transformation to digital, so they are advanced in their migration process.
The regional channels have a total of 115 concessions and 65% of these have a technical project.
Migration in regional capitals
To date, Canal 13 is the most advanced in this migration process, since it covered all the regional capitals, having 16 cities with a digital signal. In addition, another 10 concessions are close to completing their migration.
In turn, TVN has 13 migrated regional capitals; The Network completed migration in 10 regional capitals; Chilevisión ended in 10 other cities and Megavisión, in 7 capitals.
New concessions
"In terms of new concessions, this year we finished the first stage with the delivery of 51 new digital signals and launched 34 new contests, in places as diverse as Alto Hospicio (I Region), Easter Island (V Region) and Porvenir (XII Region). These processes will be completed by the end of this year or the beginning of 2020," said the president of the CNTV.
