IFT published the statistical yearbook of the sector

Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) presents the Statistical Yearbook 2018 in order to provide information to the general public, as well as to the different actors of the public and private spheres that participate in the sectors of telecommunications and broadcasting (TyR), which can be considered in decision-making and the design of public policies, for the benefit of the population.

The Yearbook presents indicators at the national level by state, and for some, at the municipal level and by 49 selected cities, during 2017. Likewise, the information is disaggregated for households and economic units.

These indicators are:

  • T&R economics: Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employees, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), investment, income, expenditures and margin of operators, price indices, market concentration indices, as well as the average consumption of telecommunications and broadcasting services.
  • Information and communication technology (ICT) equipment: availability of radios, computer equipment and digital and analogue televisions in homes and economic units.
  • Fixed telecommunications services: penetration of fixed telephone services, internet access and restricted television, as well as the participation of technologies used for the provision of fixed internet access and restricted television services.
  • Mobile telecommunications services: teledensity of mobile telephony services and internet access.
  • In addition, the Yearbook contains statistical information on AM, FM and digital terrestrial television (DTT) radio stations, as well as on radio and television consumption. In the case of telecommunications services, it provides data on the distribution of radio spectrum for mobile services at the national level, the share of expenditure on fixed and mobile services with respect to current household income, and household penetration per income decile per state.

To complement the geographical analysis, the Yearbook contains municipal maps of the penetration of fixed telephony, restricted television and internet access services. For the first time, indicators of internet, computer and social network use with a gender perspective are included.

Among the main results, it is observed that, at the end of 2017, the GDP generated by the T&R sectors was almost 550 billion pesos, which represented 2.9% of the national GDP, which means a growth of 4% compared to 2016.

On ICT equipment, the increase in digital televisions from 2016 to 2017 stands out, which went from 66 to 71 televisions per 100 homes in the country. By contrast, the availability of analog TVs decreased from 51 to 45 per 100 households in the same period.

In fixed telecommunications services, the number of fixed internet accesses through fiber optics grew 23% compared to 2016, going from 2.5 to 3.1 million. At the state level, it is observed that Mexico City is the state with the highest percentage of internet access through fiber optics (34%), while in Nayarit this proportion is below 3 percent.

Among the 49 cities included in the analysis, Hermosillo has the highest teledensity of mobile telephone service, with 120 lines per 100 inhabitants. On the contrary, Tlaxcala was the city with the lowest teledensity, 87 lines per 100 inhabitants.

With regard to indicators with a gender perspective, data are included on the main activities when using a computer, social networks or the internet – watching audiovisual content on free or paid platforms, listening to music, making use of electronic banking, making online payments or doing government procedures on the network. Statistics on the number of employees in the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors are also included.

The Yearbook has an interactive version available in the Telecommunications Information Bank (BIT), which can be consulted in the following link: https://bit.ift.org.mx Statistical> Interactive Reports> Statistical Yearbooks.
