Colombia. Docs Barcelona and the Pontifical Bolivarian University have joined forces to seek to strengthen documentary cinema and turn the City of Medellín as the capital in the field, building a bridge between all of Latin America.
This joint work has been carried out for some months. The alliance began to consolidate when both institutions found affinities and joint interests in the development of the audiovisual area, specifically in relation to non-fiction cinema both in research, production and exhibition.
The fundamental idea is to articulate initiatives and join efforts from the potential of each of the organizations. Therefore, the presentation of this initiative of Docs Barcelona hopes to have other allies who are convinced of the strength of the moving image for transformation.
Juan David Orozco, producer and representative of Docs Barcelona in Colombia, told TVyVideo+Radio that the entity's work in Medellín began four years ago with the realization of the documentary film festival Docs Barcelona + Medellín, which has taken an important force and they have begun to call it Docs Medellín.
He added that the festival has always had the support of the Mayor's Office of Medellín and now they seek to strengthen a business-university-state alliance, in which all the actors that intervene in the chain are included, including the exhibitors. During the version of the festival in 2015, the city center was held, doubling the attendance of the previous versions.
To turn Medellín into the documentary film capital of the Andean Region, Docs Barcelona and now the Pontifical Bolivarian University, seek to replicate the experience of Docs in Barcelona, a city in which it took 15 years, between 1996 and 2011, to have a positioned event. Juan David Orozco said that the goal with Medellín is very ambitious, since they want to achieve it in 10 years, of which they have run four.
In addition, they seek to take advantage of the facilities offered by the city for audiovisual production approved by the Council at the end of 2015, the Film Law approved in the country some years ago and relations with documentary film festivals in the region.
