International. Much expectation had been generated with the agreement of Sony and Panasonic, announced 18 months ago, to work on the joint production of screens under OLED technology. The market expected that as the main result of this agreement, it could count on the mass production of screens with this technology and at a low cost, both for both manufacturers and for sales in general.
But, arguing insurmountable technological obstacles, Sony and Panasonic canceled the agreement to manufacture the OLED screens and in turn announced that their next developments will focus on the development of ultra high definition or 4K screens.
So far no further details are known about what has happened. Some expeculations talk about one of the causes being that companies could not create a profitable production scheme for OLED screens.
Sources from both companies indicated that each will continue to work on the development of OLED screens independently. We will have to wait for the path followed by both companies, which have been in a restructuring process for a couple of years, after the crisis that affected the world economy.
In the case of Panasonic, at the end of 2013 it had also announced the completion of the production of plasma screens, which will stop being sold next March.
