Argentina. The Argentine government will close 2012 with about $3,152 million local pesos invested in the implementation of digital television throughout the country, both terrestrial and satellite, thus seeking to have a coverage of 86% of the territory with new television technology by the end of the year.
As part of that investment, it has delivered about 1.2 million set-top boxes and has installed digital satellite television services in 83 rural locations to expand the coverage of the service where it reached poorly or simply did not reach.
But the investment is not only based on equipment for digital TV, as it is also working for the development of audiovisual content that is in line with new technologies. This plan is based on the Audiovisual Communication Services Law, which states that 60% of the television broadcast in the country must be locally produced.
These data, recorded in the Advisory Council of the Argentine Digital Television System for the period 2010-2012, also indicate that in the implementation of digital television, free access for people with low economic resources is a fundamental part as a state policy based on said law.
Argentina currently has 59 digital terrestrial stations operating, achieving a potential coverage of digital television of 75% of the population, but with the entry into service of 31 more digital stations before the end of the year, they expect to reach a coverage of 86%.
