Uruguay. A strong protest was raised by the owners of television channels and radio stations, for what they consider a censorship of content by the government and the rules it is establishing in order to reduce violence in that country.
The statement, which was made by the National Association of Uruguayan Broadcasters, Andebu, maintains that the government distorts democracy, in clear reference to the measures adopted in recent days that seek to reduce violent content during the period established as protection of minors.
The statement indicated that "when governments intend to exercise control over the media and their contents, there is an inversion of the role that corresponds to each one, distorting the democratic quality of society."
And it is that the measures adopted by the Uruguayan government, headed by President José Mujica, seek to reduce crime by forcing channels and broadcasters to have informative programs and journalistic works within the time of child protection. He also called on the media to self-regulate when addressing issues of security and violence.
Andebu argues that with these measures what the government is doing is affecting the right of society to freely choose the informative, cultural and recreational content that it considers most appropriate to meet its own needs and initiatives.
Concludes the communiqué of the association with which it trusts that mechanisms imposed by the government aimed at controlling the freedom of programming, the functioning and independence of the media will not prosper, with the measures adopted within the framework of the Strategy for Life and Coexistence.
