Mexico. The Comisión Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Cofetel) will not be able to continue with the approval process of the project that would define the guidelines for the definitive implementation of digital television in that country, due to a legal action filed by a local media company.
In a press release, Cofetel explained that the notification received from the Federal Commission for Regulatory Improvement (Cofemer) about an action filed by Televisora Peninsular, a company associated with the Televisa Group, prevents them from continuing to advance on the issue of DTT.
Although none of the institutions revealed the exact arguments used by Televisora Peninsular to request the suspension of the transition process to digital television, Cofetel emphasized that they will not be able to continue working on the issue until this legal issue is definitively resolved.
In that sense, the institution pointed out that "Cofemer sent a letter in which it indicates that a suspension was granted within an amparo trial promoted by Televisora Peninsular S.A de C.V, the Cofemer reserves the right to notify, where appropriate, the beginning of the effects of the final and substantive resolution of the preliminary project that works in said file, as long as the final resolution of the trial is not known."
This forced Cofetel to suspend the vote, approval and subsequent publication of the project designed to review the DTT policy, which, according to the agency, is already ready to enter into force.
