International. The world's most renowned filmmakers and cinematographers are already benefiting from the image quality of the Alexa 65 for major films, while updates are already being announced that will further expand the functionalities and appeal of this system.
Offering a complete large-format solution for feature films, the Alexa 65's system comprises a 65mm digital cinema camera, custom-designed prime and zoom lenses, and fast, efficient workflow tools. IMAX has announced that it has selected the Alexa 65 platform as the digital option for 2D IMAX productions.
Available exclusively through Arri Rental, the Alexa 65 has already been provided to numerous high-profile projects; some use it as the main camera for the entire production and others use it as a special camera for certain sequences that require extreme levels of image quality.
Behind the latest updates to the Alexa 65 system are pioneering advances in technology that will also be present in ARRI's new generation of Alexa SXT cameras. The updated Alexa 65 now supports 2TB SXR capture discs, offering 40 minutes of recording at a maximum sensor resolution of 6560 x 3100.
The new SXR capture technology on disc also offers very high data recording speeds, allowing for uncompressed recording of 60 fps in maximum resolution and faster download time, providing a faster, more agile, optimized and economical workflow solution thanks to the Alexa 65 Vault S and Vault XL LAB 65 systems.
An expanded version of the Alexa XT's built-in IFM-1 ND filter system is also available for the Alexa 65. The new IFM-65 allows Alexa 65 cameras to use, behind the lens, a full range of ND filters, thus optimizing image quality and providing full performance of Prime 65 and Vintage 765 lenses by reducing the risk of multiple reflections that can be generated when stacking external filter systems. The Full Spectrum Neutral Density filters used with the IFM-65 offer a neutral color balance and the eight available densities, from ND 0.3 to ND 2.4.
An interesting new lens option has been added to the already successful Prime 65 and Vintage 765 lens lineup for the Alexa 65. The compact 50-110mm zoom only weighs 1.6kg and produces the same image quality as a prime lens, due to its high contrast and impressive resolution. ARRI's lens data system has also been integrated into the 50-110mm Zoom 65, making it the only zoom lens in size that can provide metadata to the camera.
Other user benefits of the Alexa 65 update include the same Viewfinder Smooth Mode, just like on Alexa XT cameras, and a programmable monitoring feature called Smart Zoom that allows users to zoom within the image coming out of the Monitor Out in any of the five default areas for more accurate focus calculations.
