Brazil. To test the workflow in live 4K productions, FIFA and Sony teamed up and at the next Confederations Cup to be held in Brazil they will make the first productions. For this, the Mineirão stadium in Belo Horizonte was chosen, one of the six stages that will be used in this year's tournament.
According to what the two involved revealed, their goal is to test the process of capturing and broadcasting live 4K content. This prodiction will not be broadcast to the outside public. Testing will focus on the creative and technical aspects of using 4K technology for live sports production and the production workflow process.
Mark Grinyer, head of business development in Sony's 3D, 4K and sports productions, said: "Although several aspects of 4K broadcast have already been devised and tested before, this test will be the first to address the scope of production related to live sporting events. The FIFA Confederations Cup will mark a before and after in the future of 4K technology."
The team of Sony and FIFA will produce three matches with the help of the world's first exclusive mobile production unit for 4K technology that will be facilitated by Telegenic, a PRODUCTION company based in the United Kingdom. Testing across the entire workflow will allow Sony to determine resources, personnel and technical requirements to ensure the best possible experience for viewers.
Niclas Ericson, Director of the FIFA TV Division, said: "The FIFA Confederations Cup is the perfect opportunity to test the technological and production possibilities of 4K, and we are looking forward to seeing to what extent this tournament will allow this tournament to shape sports broadcast in the future."
