Argentina. A team of professionals from Tv Pública (Channel 7) carried out on December 2 of this year the first worldwide transmission of 3D images by terrestrial mode, through the infrastructure of Argentine digital television.
The specialists managed to transmit in 3D using the same bandwidth as a 2D signal, the test was carried out using a NEC encoder from the transmitter and a PC equipped with NVIDIA boards and USB receiver, although it can be included in a set-top-box by means of an ARM chip.
In this way, three-dimensional images with a Full HD (1080p) image quality were sent by air, using a compression catalyst that enhanced the action of the AVC/H.264/MP4-10 codec.
Consequently, it was possible to send 1080p-3D using the same bitrate of 1080i-2D, managing to insert four times more information in the same bandwidth and without observing additional latency to that of the H.264 codec.
This innovation places Argentina as one of the most advanced countries in the region in terms of Digital TV developments; the test was witnessed by Channel 7 engineers who performed image quality, latency and bitrate tests, which were all satisfactory.
