Colombia. The Colombian Government presented to the Colombian Congress the draft reform of the laws regulating television, which includes the elimination of the National Television Commission, CNTV.
The project, presented two months after what was initially announced by ICT Minister Diego Molano Vega (photo), has generated controversy because it aims to return the regulation of television to the Government, as it was before the creation of the CNTV in 1991, through a board.
The new board will be made up of four members, one of them would be the Minister of ICTs and the other three would be appointed directly by the president of a list to which academics and members of the television industry who in the last year have not participated in the direction of private companies can apply.
Minister Molano assured that they seek to substantially reduce the cost of running the new board compared to the CNTV and thus increase resources for regional channels.
The project also includes that the allocation of spectrum is in charge of the National Spectrum Agency, which reports directly to the Ministry of ICTs, and issues related to business competition will be in charge of the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce.
But the road in Congress will not be easy for this project, the Government will have to defend its proposal before two other projects that have already been presented in the same direction.
