The Snell group presented at NAB a new version of Archangel, its image restoration system based on dedicated hardware .
Archangel Ph.C – HD allows to remove in real time defects such as dust, grain, noise, scratches, instability and flicker, allowing to increase the use value of the deteriorated footage. According to the firm, Archangel-based workflows facilitate the handling of large volumes of material, committing less staff and technical resources than other platforms that – in essence – are limited to facilitating the manual work of restoration artists.
Archangel's proposal is based on its use as a detector and defect measurement tool. An experienced operator will use the hardware in several 'passes' until determining a suitable combination of filters that bring the material to a level of quality suitable for use again. It is estimated that an Archangel-based workstation can deliver useful results in times up to 10 times shorter than frame-by-frame restore systems. The system supports from 4:2:2 SD material to 1080p 4:4:4 streams, and can be configured to deliver an output signal in any format.
