The MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF), an association that brings together the promoters of technologies based on this television standard, announced the creation of a 3D television working group and the launch of the '3D in MPEG' campaign.
This new working group and campaign seeks to continue MPEGIF's work in fostering the adoption and deployment of MPEG-related standards, including MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, the Emmy-winning video compression technology.
According to Sean McCarthy, chair of the TV3D working group, "Both the group and the campaign are designed to provide guidance and clear information to business decision makers. 3D television can be distributed today using MPEG-related standards. Existing broadband and transmission services and current infrastructure are ready for the third dimension and current representatives of each standard are currently working to provide a complete route to the future evolution of 3D TV."
The TV3D working group will provide a space for the free exchange of information related to this emerging technology. Its focus and constitution will be in the hands of video service providers, consumer electronics manufacturers, system integrators, software providers, as well as industry advocacy groups, analysts, financial institutions and academics.
