After its presentation at NAB 2009, Sony launched the new SRW-9000 camcorder as a product with real delivery availability at Caper 2009, in addition to other announcements.
Sony's new camcorder is being launched on the global market with events in the UK, the US and now Latin America, where it is positioning itself as the next generation, a step beyond the legendary HDW-F900R in the elite of high-performance camcorders.
The SRW-9000 combines the quality of the F-23 digital cinematography camera with the excellence of the SR recording format, in a team of equivalent size to the HDW-F900 and a weight of 6.5 Kg, with power consumption of approximately 57W.
The new camcorder is aimed at the sector of television productions for prime time, as well as the production of commercials for television and cinema, generation of documentaries, high quality music videos and digital cinematography in general.
The SRW-9000 uses three state-of-the-art Hyper HAD FX progressive capture CCD sensors with which it reaches a sensitivity of 480 ISO, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 55.5dB. The analog-to-digital converters are 14-bit and have 8 curves of Hyper Gamma, optional S-Log and User Gamma (via the CvpFileEditor), which allow it to offer a dynamic range of 800% with a latitude equivalent to celluloid. The color space is ITU 4:2:2 and 4:4:4. The mount is a bayonet for 2/3" lenses and the camera has the ease of image reversal.
Sony reports that the focus assistant function has been incorporated, which makes the new HDVF-C30WR viewfinder, specially designed for this type of cameras, offer remarkable versatility in its genre, allowing the display of pre-corrected images with LUTs with greater control of the focus adjustment.
In 4:2:0 it supports the following recording formats 1080 4:2:2 in 23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p/50i, 59.94p/59.94i, while in 4:4:4 it can do 1080 23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p RGB SQ 440 Mbps or HQ 880 Mbps. In 4:4:4 it allows to do 1080 1~59.94p.
With the optional HD-SDI expansion card, model HKSR-9001, two HD-SDI outputs are added that can be used as Dual Link and an auxiliary input port that allows to increase the audio inputs through the use of external embedders. With the HKSR-9002 Picture Cache Board you can capture variable frame rates from 1 to 60 fps, and even do "speed ramp". This option also offers the possibility of "loop recording" in an interval of 4 seconds, while the camcorder is in Stand By. Once the REC button is pressed, the images are transferred to the tape and it continues to record normally in real time. Finally, with the processing card model HKSR-9003 it is possible to capture and record in RGB 4:4:4. This option also offers S-Log Gamma for those who want to work the video signal with the latitude of the film and also allows the visualization with LUT in the monitor output as in the F-23 and F-35.
The AP-1 assistant panel allows an operator to control camera functions remotely.
Sony is investing heavily in the SR format as a format for Prime Time in Television and Digital Cinematography and as the format for 2K and 4K in the near future. The SR format offers interoperability with HDCAM in its tape workflow and transfer to networks in TIFF and DPX/Cineon formats while Sony is working on implementing the SR SStP (Simple Studio Profile) in MXF by early 2010.
