Omneon Inc. announced that Discovery Communications has increased omneon Spectrum media servers at its Miami headquarters, which serve the U.S. and Latin American Hispanic markets.
"We have worked with Spectrum systems at our Miami facility since 2003 and, during this time, the modular design of Omneon servers has enabled a strategy of direct expansion of our distribution network, including the launch of HD services throughout the Latin American region." said Joe Walker, vice president of engineering for Discovery Communications. "Omneon provides a reliable solution, scalable server platforms that enable highly automated workflows across a transmission plant. Because these solutions are backed by responsible customer service, we can easily customize our server configuration and grow our intake, review, and playout capabilities to meet our operational needs."
Discovery reconfigured and expanded the existing facilities in Miami reflecting the SD intake and playout system in two phases. The company first expanded its Spectrum media server system to create a mirror of the SD playout system and a separate SD ingest system. Discovery then added an HD playout system to this operation, improving the ingest system to accommodate SD and HD content.
The upgrade to HD, provided by Omneon servers, has allowed Discovery to expand the capabilities of its ingest and broadcast systems and introduce the Discovery HD Theater channel to the Latin American market.
