Omneon Inc. announced that Brazil's TV Globo is using Omneon Spectrum media servers to broadcast its national and international programming from its main broadcast center, located on the premises of the Botanical Garden in Rio de Janeiro.
"Our application requires that we have a reliable server platform to support our streaming needs and that provides us with the flexibility needed to operate in both SD and HD," said Paulo Santos, director of TV Globo's Broadcast Operations Division.
As the premier distribution center for worldwide programming, TV Globo's facilities at the Botanical Garden required servers with exceptional reliability, ease of expansion, and a proven track record. Therefore, TV Globo initially installed two six-channel servers, main and backup, plus a third two-channel server to add redundancy and allow future expansion.
Later, TV Globo installed the modular Spectum system designed to convert media servers, along with the Omneon MediaDirector and MediaPort components, into core and support systems, providing more storage capacity and supporting a greater number of channels.
Omneon systems are built on an open architecture and are based on industry standards, allowing TV Globo engineers to develop their own automation and media management software for servers.
With the Spectrum server, the material is ingested and transferred via FTP to a central storage system; it is then ready to be broadcast and transferred via FTP to Omneon servers, all under the control of TV Globo's internal automation and management software.
