Brazil. Rohde & Schwarz has been selected as the supplier of the first commercial transmitters for DTV+ technology in Brazil. This strategic alliance marks a turning point for open television in Brazil.
Rohde & Schwarz will supply transmitters developed specifically to meet the needs of DTV+ technology, providing a high-performance, future-proof platform for the next generation of broadcasting.
DTV+ promises a new viewing experience with ultra-high image quality in 4K and, in the future, up to 8K. A key differentiator of DTV+ is its application-centric approach, which seamlessly integrates free-to-air TV with broadband connectivity to enhance the smart TV experience.
Through the DTV+/Globo app, viewers will enjoy a unified experience regardless of the source of the content and benefit from advanced features such as targeted advertising and in-app purchases, which can be controlled remotely. In addition, the improvement in spectrum efficiency will ensure wider and more flexible coverage.
"Rohde & Schwarz is proud to support Globo in launching this revolutionary technology," said Steven Edwards, Vice President of Broadcast Distribution at Rohde & Schwarz. "Our transmitters are the result of intense research and development, leveraging our unique software-defined exciter technology to deliver higher performance and an enhanced feature set, and will help combine the advantages of terrestrial broadcasting with those of the digital world."
The agreement was formalized at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) 2025 in Amsterdam. The transmitters are scheduled to be installed in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with initial deliveries in the metropolitan regions of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
By using the top of the VHF Band III frequency, this project ensures a smooth transition to DTV+ without interrupting current transmissions. This marks the world's first deployment of this frequency spectrum for television applications. The project includes advanced technologies such as MIMO transmission, which significantly increases data transmission speed and signal quality, as well as geo-targeting.
"DTV+ represents an important step for Brazilian television," says Raymundo Barros, Globo's Chief Technology Officer. "The associated innovative technologies will redefine the television experience for millions of viewers in Brazil. Rohde & Schwarz transmitters play a key role in the development of this system."
