Colombia. The Communications Regulatory Commission, CRC, presented the key report on investment in the telecommunications sector during 2023, with detailed information on public and private investment, highlighting the relationship of investment with the total revenues of companies and the percentage evolution of annual investment by operator.
The Investment Observatory in the telecommunications sector developed by the CRC, uses the Accounting Separation Model (MSC) that is based on the financial statements of the main companies in the sector, along with information reported by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (MinTIC) and Radio Televisión Nacional de Colombia (RTVC). This methodology ensures an accurate and transparent analysis of telecommunications investment in the country.
According to the observatory, in 2023, total investment in telecommunications reached $7.53 trillion, which represents a decrease of 14.4% compared to 2022. Despite this decrease, the 2023 figure is the second highest in the last seven years, exceeding that recorded in 2021 by 5.1%.
Public sector investment in 2023, led by MinTIC, was $251,505 million, 48% more than in 2022. This investment was mainly focused on the National Connectivity Project to change lives, with the aim of bringing broadband internet to 175 municipalities in various regions with low coverage.
For its part, private investment reached $7.3 trillion, with a decrease of 15.5% compared to 2022. The ratio of investment to total revenues stood at 21.6%, 4.1 percentage points below that recorded in 2022.
"This report is of great relevance for public and private entities, as well as for all citizens interested in knowing the status of investment in telecommunications. These analyses allow us to identify opportunities to optimize investment and focus efforts on the areas and activities that require greater attention to drive the expansion of services, by directly benefiting end users with a broader and better quality offer." Lina María Duque Del Vecchio, Commissioner and Executive Director of the CRC.
