Colombia. Artificial intelligence is no longer an exclusive tool for virtual assistants or automation of administrative tasks. Today, one of the biggest challenges for telecom operators is to integrate this technology into the heart of their operations, where it can transform network management, optimize resources, and improve the experience of millions of users.
In a context in which data traffic continues to grow and networks are increasingly complex due to the expansion of technologies such as 5G, IoT and cloud computing, artificial intelligence is beginning to consolidate itself as an enabler for operators to evolve towards smarter, more automated and predictive operations.
The trend is already visible worldwide. According to the GSMA, although the adoption of artificial intelligence in the telecommunications industry is advancing rapidly, only 16% of generative AI deployments are currently focused on network operations, which shows an important opportunity to accelerate its implementation in one of the most strategic processes for the sector.
For Colombia, where operators face the challenge of responding to a growing demand for connectivity, quality of service and new digital experiences, the application of artificial intelligence in network operation can become a determining factor in improving efficiency and strengthening the competitiveness of the sector.
"For the past few years, the conversation has focused on how artificial intelligence improves the user experience. However, the next big leap is happening within the networks. AI is enabling operators to automate processes, optimize resources, anticipate incidents, and make operational decisions with greater speed and accuracy," says Juliana Aguilera, Account Manager Americas at JSC Ingenium.
Among the applications that are beginning to gain prominence are predictive infrastructure maintenance, early identification of faults, optimization of network traffic, automation of OSS/BSS processes, intelligent inventory management and real-time analysis of service performance, capabilities that reduce response times, increase network availability and optimize operating costs.
This evolution also represents a shift in the way operators approach their digital transformation. Rather than incorporating new tools, the challenge is to integrate artificial intelligence with existing systems, ensure data quality, and strengthen interoperability between platforms so that automated decisions have a real impact on the operation.
"Artificial intelligence does not replace the technical knowledge of operators; it enhances it. Its true value lies in converting large volumes of information into faster and more accurate decisions, allowing for more efficient management of increasingly dynamic and complex networks," adds Aguilera.
Internationally, the industry is moving towards the development of increasingly autonomous networks, capable of monitoring their performance, identifying anomalies and executing corrective actions with minimal human intervention, a trend that seeks to improve the resilience of networks and accelerate the provision of digital services.
