Latin America. Radio spectrum bands below 1GHz are presented as an opportunity for 5G services to develop in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Due to its conditions, this portion of spectrum will make it possible to promote different associated technologies (such as Big Data, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence) to be used in rural areas, as explained in the study published by 5G Americas "State of the sub-1 GHz radio spectrum bands in Latin America", which analyzes the situation of spectrum bands of this type in 18 countries in the region. and that are identified for international mobile telecommunications (IMT).
The report highlights that the 700 MHz band was recently tendered in Guatemala, so it is active for most markets in the region with the exception of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Meanwhile, the 600 MHz band is in the bidding process in Jamaica, and presents great opportunities for 5G services to be developed.
The report also reflects the opportunities that low radio spectrum bands represent for the development of 5G services in different vertical markets.
"Sectors that develop in suburban and rural areas will take greater advantage of these developments, particularly agriculture and e-government initiatives. These bands have high propagation properties, which makes them attractive to provide mobile network coverage in these spaces," explained José Otero, vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean at 5G Americas.
