IDET recognizes effort to solve spectrum cost

IDET

Mexico. The members of the Institute of Telecommunications Law, IDET , held a meeting with officials of the Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, who presented in detail the considerations and scope of the proposal regarding charges for the use of the radio spectrum that the regulatory body raised to the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) to be taken into account. for the design of the economic packages that the Executive sends to Congress.

The meeting was attended by Víctor Manuel Rodríguez Hilario, Head of the Executive Coordination, Alejandro Navarrete Torres, Head of the Radioelectric Spectrum Unit, Alexa Díaz, General Director of Economic Consultation and Carlos Sánchez Bretón, General Director of Spectrum Economy and Orbital Resources,

In addition, IFT officials also presented the content of the recent "Market Study on Radio Spectrum Costs for Mobile Services in Mexico", published by the regulatory body at the beginning of last August.

In their presentation, IFT officials stressed the relevance that this issue has in the current provision of mobile services in our country, as well as the negative impact generated by the adoption of fiscal policies that only pursue a collection purpose and that do not contemplate the current market structure in our country, the precarious economic conditions that prevail, as well as the financial conditions of the current companies providing mobile services in Mexico, which have seen their investment and growth possibilities diminished due to the high costs currently paid in our country for the use of the radio spectrum as an indispensable input for the provision of such services.

The meeting of the members of both Institutes, represented an unbeatable opportunity for the free and respectful exchange of reflections and opinions on a core aspect that affects not only the development of the telecommunications sector as such, but above all, in the development of the country and the conditions under which Mexicans can connect to modern telecommunications networks and interact with the rest of the world in various areas of economic activity, cultural, artistic and social, to name a few.

Gerardo Soria, President of IDET expressed to the public servants of the IFT the concern that on several occasions has expressed this institute in which professionals interested in the development of the telecommunications sector in Mexico participate, and agreed with several members of IDET in recognizing the initiative of the IFT to enter the analysis of the issue of the cost of the spectrum and publicize its findings and proposals. Likewise, Soria expressed IDET's commitment to continue contributing to the public debate on this very important issue.

"In the IDET we celebrate the adoption of this type of exercise in which the authorities are sensitive to the impact generated by the adoption of certain normative and/or regulatory policies, as well as the interest shown in the reception of ideas, comments, observations and concrete proposals that are aimed at strengthening the regulatory framework and that pay in the generation of synergies and positive conditions that benefit users. and the audiences of telecommunications and broadcasting services in Mexico," he said.

Finally, Gerardo Soria said that "we recognize and celebrate the dialogue and the spirit of collaboration provided by the IFT for the presentation of a topic of the greatest relevance for the telecommunications sector in Mexico, its technical-regulatory work in the matter, as well as the work of awareness and follow-up that has been carried out before the tax authorities in our country, pending that these and the Mexican Congress find the spaces to achieve a fundamental transformation in the approach that will prevail for the year 2024 and subsequent years, which contributes better to the expansion of telecommunications networks and services provided in Mexico, and that these are provided in better conditions of quality and price to the millions of users.
