Tecomtel discussed regulatory challenges at opening session

tecomtel

Chile. This May 16 opened its doors the second edition of Tecomtel, the technology fair for the Chilean broadcast market, which takes place in the Parque Center and brings together the most outstanding technology distributors in the country and with a growing participation of the factories.

Its opening session discussed the challenges of regulating a hyper-connected society. The interesting panel was integrated by Nicole Cardoch, Undersecretary of the Ministry General Secretariat of Government, Claudio Araya, Undersecretary of Telecommunications (SUBTEL), María Constanza Tobar, Counselor of the CNTV, and moderated by Pablo Christiny, Executive Director of Fundación Nativo Digital.

The representatives of the Chilean government highlighted two of the factors that must be taken into account when regulating today. The first is the need to protect both the most vulnerable users, which are children and adolescents, who increasingly watch less traditional television and have more access to platforms such as YouTube and Tik Tok without control, as well as the industry and content generators.

The second challenge in regulation is that the corporations of digital platforms are abroad. Therefore, it is difficult to regulate and how to regulate. In addition, they pointed out that regulation should not be only local, because it could fall into protectionism and without real effects. A regulation that follows international standards must be sought.

The guests of the panel also pointed out the need to transform the regulatory entities, because, as in the Chilean case, the CNTV only has an impact on traditional television, but today the audiovisual ecosystem includes digital platforms.

Tecomtel will be held until May 17, with 1,350 square meters of technology exhibition, with more than 50 exhibiting companies, 200 brands and 40 conference sessions.
