MTC approved guidelines against media violence

MTC

Peru. The Ministry of Communications reported that the guidelines for compliance with the obligations of the media established in Law 30364, Law to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Violence against Women and Members of the Family Group, have been approved.

The guidelines, which include the treatment of news about the case of violence against women and members of the family group, were announced yesterday by Álvarez during the seminar "Gender and Communication", organized by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru in coordination with Calandria and ConcorTV, within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Thus, Guideline 1 states that the media must value the information on cases of violence against women with its real dimension and contextualize the news.

Guideline 2 states that the media should seek expert opinions on issues of violence against women or family violence.

While Guideline 3 refers to the media must respect the dignity of the victims, as well as their pain and that of their families.

According to Guideline 4, the media must preserve the identity of the victims.

Guideline 5 indicates that the media promote the dissemination of cases of women who emerge from a situation of violence and manage to rebuild their lives.

With respect to Guideline 6, the media should try to follow up on the cases they disseminate.

Finally, according to Guidelines 7, the media must provide useful information to accompany the story.

It should be noted that the guidelines seek to guide the media to be configured as agents transforming social imaginaries and contribute to the formation of a social conscience on the problem of violence against women and members of the family group.
