Chile. The town of Puerto Williams, located in the Magallanes Region, the Chilean government and the company Entel inaugurated 5G connectivity in this area of the country. With this milestone, Puerto Williams became the southernmost town in the world to access a 5G network, which is good news for the connectivity of its inhabitants, who have historically suffered digital isolation.
During the day, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, participated together with the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, local authorities and executives of the company Entel. The authorities visited the Municipal High School of Puerto Williams, where they made a video call about 5G to a school in Arica, a city in the extreme north of the country, in a sample of how technologies break geographical barriers and allow connection throughout the territory.
The Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, said that "we are seeing how the development of telecommunications allows children, young people, adults and the elderly, who live in the southernmost area of Chile, to have the same possibilities as a person in Santiago, Arica and even the United States. Having access to the digital world is having access to knowledge, education, telemedicine and a series of services that significantly improve people's quality of life, therefore, no one can be left out."
The Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, said that "connecting remote locations, taking them out of digital isolation is one of the objectives of our Zero Digital Gap plan, in this case it is that the inhabitants of Puerto Williams can access the same connectivity and quality of service as other users in the country. In addition, it shows that the deployment of 5G is not concentrated in large cities and that, on the contrary, it seeks to cover the largest amount of population in different areas of Chile."
Chile is a leader in the region in terms of 5G deployment, being the only country in this part of the world that has a deployment of this technology nationwide.
