Peru granted 171 radio and TV authorizations in 2020

perú, autorizaciones tv y radioPeru. More than 1,700,000 Peruvians were able to access radio services and nearly 400,000 television services during 2020. That was achieved thanks to the 171 new broadcasting authorizations granted by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) throughout the country.

These authorisations, granted in more than 20 regions, allow broadcasters to provide the service for a renewable period of ten years. In addition, they give citizens the possibility of being better informed and having more variety of radio and television programming.

"It is important to note that, of the more than two million Peruvians benefited from the authorizations, 29% are located in rural areas of preferential social interest," said mariella Carrasco, general director of the General Directorate of Telecommunications Authorizations (DGAT).

In addition, with the new permits granted by the MTC, 29 localities, such as Cañaris (Lambayeque), Patambuco (Puno), Quinistaquillas (Moquegua), among others, accessed for the first time the radio or television service in the country.

Of the total of the new authorizations, 135 were to provide the service on radio and 36 were intended to broadcast signal on television. In both cases, the objective was to expand the coverage of broadcasting services to allow more Peruvians to have access in different areas of the country.

Carrasco added that, "the new authorizations are of vital importance because they provide greater alternatives to be informed, educated and also entertained; during and after the Covid-19 health crisis".

According to DGAT figures, at the end of 2020; 80% of districts in the country already have FM radio coverage and 53% already have access to television.
