MTC paves the way for the deployment of 5G in Peru

5g, mtcPeru. The new era of the use of telecommunications for the coming years will be marked by the development of 5G that will provide an internet 10 times faster than the current 4G.

The shift to 5G will enable better connectivity and higher internet speeds. Its implementation will be of vital importance to achieve advances in telemedicine, intelligent public safety (integration and availability of cameras), traffic management and also to enhance virtual education.

This was indicated by the Deputy Minister of Communications, Virginia Nakagawa, during the virtual talk called "Peru's agenda for the development of 5G technologies", organized by the Master's Degree in Regulation in Public Services of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP).

"All the necessary conditions have been generated for the deployment and development of 5G in Peru for the benefit of users. In addition, the role of operating companies is important for the investment and implementation of this technology," said the deputy minister.

The deputy minister reported that the MTC will carry out by the end of this year a public consultation process of the bands identified for 5G, such as 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz. In the first half of next year, Proinversión will be entrusted with the tender that allows its allocation and the development of investment commitments that promote connectivity in isolated and difficult to access areas.

"Peru is the country that identified the most spectrum in the 3.5 GHz (500 MHz) band. We are evaluating ordering a minimum of an additional 200 MHz in the 3.5 GHz frequency band for public tender. Thanks to this, the pioneering frequency band will be made available for the development of 5G technology worldwide," said Nakagawa Morales.

It is important to remember that 1G technology served to make analog calls on the first cell phones. 2G allowed the sending of text messages and access to data in a basic way. While 3G marked a milestone with the emergence of smartphones and mobile broadband until 4G enabled the use of streaming platforms and internet shopping, among other applications of daily use.

5G advances in the region
Peru is advancing on the same path as the countries of the region (USA, Uruguay, Chile or Brazil) in the attribution, channeling and identification of millimeter bands to give way to 5G, which represents a new stage in the telecommunications industry and its effects will impact on all sectors and users.

"We work to remove barriers to access so that companies can compete and seek to free up digital paths for the next government to implement 5G technology, which will result in greater and better services for all Peruvians," Nakagawa said.

Projections in Latin America indicate that by 2023 the region will have 12.8 million 5G connections, which represents an arrival of 17% of the population. While, by 2025, the region will have 61.9 million 5g connections representing 41% of the population, according to figures from GSM Intelligence.
