Older adults consume more TV with less representation

Chile. A report presented by the National TV Council of Chile, shows as a result that older adults have little presence on local television and that there are no older faces – such as presenters or journalists – on the screen.

The study called "Older Adults and Television", was announced by the president of the National Television Council (CNTV), Catalina Parot. "This study reflects audience perception and the national screen's debt to older adults. There is a demand for quality content of interest to this segment," he said.

The total consumption of television has registered a significant increase this year 2020, in the context of the health crisis, in all population segments. However, that increase is greatest among audiences 65 and older, with almost an hour and a half more viewing.
Women see 9 hours a day and men almost 8 hours, according to data from Kantar Ibope.
The programs with the highest audience of older adults are mainly newscasts, soap operas and service programs, from Monday to Friday. On weekends, this segment mainly watches football (archive matches), travel and culinary reports, as well as movies.
According to the study, 67% of older people – aged 65 and over – agree that they appear "little time" on screen. The other age groups have the same opinion regarding the representation of the elderly on television.

Likewise, respondents overwhelmingly estimated that "there are no television faces such as presenters or older journalists on our screens."

As for the content of greatest interest to older adults, 53% said they find them on pay TV or on the Internet. 66% of this segment demands more programming aimed at their interests.

This age group prefers a television that shows them culture, nature, travel and national and international news. It also seeks to entertain itself with fictional programs.
