Brazil. With the popularization of streaming in Brazil, free-to-air television has felt the need to recycle to meet the viewer in an increasingly interactive way.
According to the Fórum do Sistema Brasileiro de TV Digital Terrestre, Foro SBTVD, it is true that open programming, even in the face of video content platforms and cable television, still has 70% of the national audience, but this does not guarantee that open television will always have national preference.
As for the changes, José Marcelo Amaral, president of the SBTVD Forum, pointed out that in 2020 TV manufacturers will be able to launch new models with the DTV Play already on board. This feature will allow the user to receive content not only over the air, but also over the Internet, through streaming platforms. The novelty promises a breakthrough in the color system of the devices, with vibrant images (HDR standard) and more impactful audio (immersive).
The executive also stressed that, in terms of reach (or signal coverage), open television comes out before streaming and pay television precisely because it is free and reaches the entire national territory. More than that, he reinforces that after migrating to the digital standard, viewers have all content available through mobile devices, without any additional cost or data consumption.
Regarding content, the president of the SBTVD Forum sees live broadcasts as one of the great differences of open television, as well as telenovelas, which provide 100% national productions. "The public always wants to follow sporting events, as is the case this year when we will have the Olympics and live journalism. Along with soap operas and reality shows, these exclusive contents will be the flagship of television," he said.
In addition, Amaral said that the analog signal will soon cease to exist in Brazil. In 2007, the digitalization process began and, by 2023, 100% of Brazilian households will adapt to the new model.
