Peru. The Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, has recorded a steady growth in the granting of new authorizations for radio stations during the last five years. There are currently 5,746 stations to provide the sound broadcasting service, achieving an increase of 46%, compared to the 3,936 in 2014.
The significant growth was mainly registered in the regions of Cusco, Cajamarca, Ancash and Lima, where the authorization of new radios reports the largest increase with 77%, 46%, 33% and 31%, respectively, in the last five years.
"The sector has the firm objective of improving access to the broadcasting service and this increase is important because it allows us to generate greater communication and integration alternatives in the country," said Mariella Carrasco, general director of Authorizations in telecommunications.
During 2019, 219 new authorizations were granted for sound broadcasting, 29% in areas of preferential social interest, which will benefit more than 22 districts, from nine regions of the country.
In this way, the sector continues to promote the development of the broadcasting service, with the aim of massifying radio, especially in more remote areas that provide greater development opportunities in favor of citizens.
World Radio Day
Radio continues to be the means of communication with the largest audience, as well as being a personal and interactive platform where people can express their opinions on a topic of common interest and even save lives in situations of natural disasters.
On February 13 of each year, World Radio Day is celebrated and this edition the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) divides it into three main sub-themes: advocating for pluralism in radio, encouraging representation in the newsroom, and promoting the diversity of editorial content and types of programmes.
