After 5 years of DTT in Colombia, there is 92.5% penetration

Colombia. Public television in Colombia was turned on on June 13, 1954, when its service barely reached a few Colombians. Today, after five years of service of the new Digital Terrestrial Television, DTT, 92.5% of the population has free access to this means of audiovisual communication.

In fact, this percentage enjoys a technologically enhanced broadcast television signal that offers higher image quality, better sound and possibilities for interactivity. It can be tuned for free on the TV using a UHF antenna -ceiling antenna- and with a decoder, depending on each case.

What DTT does is a more efficient use of spectrum bandwidth, allowing television operators to increase the number of channels. In the same space that an analog channel occupies today, four or more DTT channels can be included depending on the quality of the signal you want to transmit -standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD)-. To these benefits is added that it allows to free up spectrum in order to use it for other telecommunications services.

The offer of the channels: television and stations
The offer of television channels and radio stations depends on the region where you are located. National public and private channels are the same throughout the national territory. However, regional channels can only be tuned in the impact region of each of them, as can local for-profit and non-profit channels.

The DTT offer in Colombia has 32 contents available to be tuned to their televisions, which guarantees an agile transmission without delays. Therefore, whoever enjoys a football match in this system, shouts the goal first, which if he saw it through a cable television operator.

It is important to remember that DTT is Colombian free, broadcast and broadcast television. That is to say that through this service international television channels are not tuned, for this you must have a paid link with an operator providing the subscription television service.

What to do to turn on the DTT signal?
To receive the DTT signal at home, the first thing to do is to check if there is coverage in your area by entering the website: www.tdtparatodos.tv. Then, you have to identify if the TV has built-in digital technology, that is, if it has the DVBT-2 tuner (models 2014 onwards) and connect it to a UHF antenna (ceiling or aerial).

If the TV does not have built-in digital technology, it is an old belly or flat screen TV, it is necessary to install a DVBT-2 decoder and must be connected to both the external antenna -UHF- and the TV.

Subsequently, and for both cases, the automatic search of the channels must be carried out. For the first case, through the remote control of the TV; for the second, through the remote control of the decoder. It is important to note that a set-top box must be installed per TV.

The technical recommendation for the reception of the signal is that the external or ceiling antenna -UHF- is always installed. However, it can also be tested with indoor reception in some regions of the country and is done by a small antenna that must be installed near a window and that usually comes included with the decoder.
