This is how 5G will impact critical communications

Latin America. From the advent of 5G, cellular communications will no longer be used only for voice and mobile broadband services for phones, tablets and computers. The new generation of mobile technologies will give way to a wide range of use cases that, supported by the advanced features and functionalities of 5G, promise to revolutionize all areas of the economy and human life.

One of the three groups of 5G use cases is URLLC (Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications). Under this category are all those 5G applications that have high requirements in terms of reliability and availability of communications, in addition to low latency in the transfer of information, according to an infographic from 5G Americas.

Unlike its predecessor— 4G, which provides 4 millisecond latency according to 3GPP Release 14 specifications — 5G promises a latency of just 1 millisecond, as defined in Release 15 for 5G NR (5G New Radio).

Thanks to this technical advantage and its high reliability, 5G will be able to support so-called "mission critical" applications, which include those that are related to emergency services and public safety, and that may even involve risk of human lives. This includes both communication services used by security forces such as police, firefighters and rescuers, among others, as well as advanced telemedicine services such as remote diagnosis and even remote surgeries.

Also in this category are communications that require low latency in order to ensure real-time interaction, whether between humans, human machine or machine by machine. For example, in the case of transport, driver assistance applications, intelligent traffic management and even autonomous driving, i.e. unmanned vehicles, can be considered.

Segments such as manufacturing and other industrial sectors such as energy will also benefit from new use cases such as smart grid, industrial control, remote motion control and robotics, and augmented reality and virtual reality applications that will completely change production processes.
