Mexico hosted the international forum of regulators

Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, was the organizer of the International Forum of Regulators "Advancing within the Digital Ecosystem: Revolution, Evolution or more of the same?", which was part of the Week of Policy and Regulation of Communications of the International Institute of Communications, IIC, which was held in Mexico City, from October 7 to 11.

During this Forum, in which Commissioners and IFT officials participated, relevant aspects of digital markets, consumer protection, net neutrality, connectivity and sustainability, among others, were discussed.

The IFT hosted the Seminar: "How Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Industries and Society", where the challenges for regulation and legislation were addressed, as well as the governance approach to face them.

Similarly, within the framework of the work of the Week of Communications Policy and Regulation of the IIC, the 49th annual meeting of the Institute was held, inaugurated by the Commissioner President of the IFT, Gabriel Contreras, in which more than 250 international experts met to discuss the priorities regarding the convergent communications ecosystem.

At that meeting, topics such as incentives to promote investment and foster innovation through connectivity, the creation of robust data economies to drive the transition from the internet of consumption to the internet of production, digital content, access and inclusion, competition and market concentration were also discussed.

In addition, other analysis sessions were held on topics of radio spectrum, coordination and regulatory simplification in the face of convergence and privacy, data protection, piracy and intellectual property, emergencies and protection of critical infrastructures and technological innovation.

Likewise, the importance of the deployment of infrastructure for telecommunications services and financing strategies for the development of telecommunications, ICT and digital networks was emphasized.

Participants included representatives from authorities in 10 countries: the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC); the Office of Communications (Ofcom) of the United Kingdom; the Vice-Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies of Ecuador; the Secretariat of Information and Communications Technologies of Argentina; the Superintendency of Telecommunications (SUTEL) of Costa Rica; the National Spectrum Agency and the Communications Regulation Commission of Colombia; the Qatar Communications Regulatory Authority; the Jamaica Broadcasting Commission; the Telecommunications and Information Technology Investment Fund in the Technical Unit of Honduras and the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing of Guatemala.

Representatives of international organizations and associations such as the Inter-American Association of Telecommunications Companies (ASIET), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Association of Mobile Operators GSMA, the Telecommunication Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (COMTELCA), the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Network also attended. Central American Telecommunications (REDCA).

Members of the industry also participated, such as América Móvil, Telefónica, AT&T, Verizon, Ericsson, Facebook, Google and Microsoft, among others; as well as consultants and members of Mexican and foreign chambers and associations.

Within the framework of these events, high-level bilateral meetings were held with the presidents and other representatives of the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of State, the National Communications Commission of Taiwan and the Communications Regulatory Commission of Colombia, among others.

Through the exchange of best practices between regulators, the IFT nurtures and strengthens its actions to fulfill its mandate to generate benefits for users of telecommunications and broadcasting services; and shares with other institutions experiences that may be useful to achieve common objectives in the region or globally.
