Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, made available to the public the Calculator of probabilities of adoption of ICT and internet uses in Mexico http://Calculadoraprob.ift.org.mx, which estimates the probability that a person uses a computer, internet, mobile phone, internet through a smartphone, as well as to carry out online activities such as shopping, payments, banking, or interacting with the government; according to their age, sex, educational level, occupation, income and place of residence.
The tool was developed based on the results of the study of ICT Adoption and Internet Uses in Mexico: Impact of the sociodemographic characteristics of users, carried out with information from the National Survey on the Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Homes (ENDUTIH), published in 2017, which is representative at the national level, by state and for 49 cities, in which almost 50% of the population in Mexico live.
The importance of the Calculator lies in the fact that society will have a friendly tool to know the probabilities of using ICT and the internet, based on the sociodemographic characteristics of the population and their place of residence.
On the other hand, the Calculator is an instrument for governments at the federal, state and 49 cities included to develop public policies aimed at reducing the digital divide, since it provides information on the population groups with the lowest probability of access.
The Calculator is an interactive tool that works by following two simple steps:
The user chooses the adoption of ICT or use of the internet that is of interest to analyze (computer, internet, mobile phone or internet through smartphone, or make purchases, payments, banking operations or interact with the government);
Select the sociodemographic characteristics of the profile you want to analyze (sex, age, education, occupation, income range, state and city of residence).
Once done, the tool will display the probability of use considering the selected options. Among the main findings, it stands out that the educational level and the level of household income have the greatest impact on the probability of a person to adopt an ICT or use the internet for the purposes studied. Also, in most cases, the probability of use and adoption is higher for men than for women, even if their level of education and income is similar.
The Calculator also shows a summary of the sociodemographic characteristics of the population of each state and of the 49 cities available in the ENDUTIH, as well as a summary of the penetration and teledensity of fixed and mobile telephony services, as well as fixed and mobile broadband at the state level.
