Chile. Human dignity and fundamental rights were the main causes of complaints to the National Television Council in 2017, concentrating 53% of the total issues denounced. Then, democracy, pluralism and peace follow with 14%. According to the Balance of Citizen Complaints of the CNTV 2017 released on its web portal.
The events that marked the agenda of citizen complaints was the coverage of the morning of Channel 13, the oral trial of Nabila Rifo, victim of gender violence, broadcast that received a record of 1,133 complaints and the numerous complaints of the different broadcasts of the reality show of Mega "Doble Tentación" with 1,151 claims sent to the CNTV.
The number of complaints received in 2017 marks a historic milestone, not only of the last ten years, but of the history of the CNTV. To date, 2014 was the year that concentrated the highest number of complaints with 4,331 complaints filed.
When analyzing the profile of the complainant, we see that it is women who most express their discomfort before the CNTV with 67.8% versus men with 32.2% of the manifestations. 52% of whistleblowers are between 18 and 29 years old, a trend that has been going on for at least three years, where between 48% and 52% of whistleblowers are young. 51% have a university education and 60% of the complaints come from the Metropolitan region.
Hand in hand with the spaces with the most complaints are the most denounced genres, which were Miscellaneous (44.3%), Reality Television (29.5%) and Conversation (9.1%). "True Lies", "Close-up" and "Vertigo" are the most denounced talk shows.
For the President of the CNTV, Oscar Reyes, it is important to make this balance of complaints year after year. "In Chile there is increasingly self-regulation by the concessionaires, they have managed to place on the agenda a legitimate and healthy debate on the quality of television content, all have a Code of Ethics, all comply with family and child protection schedule, and at the same time, we have working tables and agreements with the CNTV for various issues such as media treatment for cases of women victims of violence, among others".
Complaints in 2018
To date, the CNTV has already received a total of 1,094 citizen complaints. On the morning of CHV, in its broadcast on January 8, it received 370 complaints for the broadcast of the speeches of Marcela Aranda, spokeswoman for the Bus de la Libertad; "Vertigo" of Channel 13 with 305 claims in its first two broadcasts and 38 complaints for the sayings of Julio César Rodríguez in the broadcast of the Oscars by CHV.
