Profile of the video game market in Mexico 2017

Mexico. The video game market is one of the fastest growing segments in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry. According to the latest report by The Competitive Intelligence Unit S.C., it is estimated that in 2017 it will reach a value of $24,771 million pesos, which represents an annual growth of 8.4%.

Although we are in the last two months of the year, it is precisely at this time when Mexicans make the highest average expenditure on these entertainment elements. In the coming days the good end will begin, which marks the beginning of the economic spillover generated by the end of the year of the Mexicans. It is estimated that during this season of offers for video games the expenditure will be $ 4.77 billion pesos, later in the december dates the expected expenditure by Mexicans will amount to 7.21 billion pesos. In this way, the expenditure generated between November and December will represent 48.8% of the annual expenditure.

A few days ago Microsoft launched its newest console, the XBOX ONE X and with it are all the players in the market waiting for users to acquire the one that fits their preferences.

This manufacturer has a marked preference in the possession of consoles of Mexicans, 60.6% of the total consoles in Mexico are from said developer being XBOX 360 the console with the highest tenure to 3Q17 (28.6%).

Followed by Microsoft is SONY with 28.7% of the market, that is, less than half of what its competitor owns. When disaggregating SONY's share, the PlayStation 4 console has the largest holding (12.6%) followed by the PlayStation 3 with 10.3% of the market.

Although the sales of consoles and the software used in them is the variable that weighs the most in the composition of the value of the video game market, when analyzing the integration in its entirety of the industry (supply and demand), it is identified that the greatest growth in video players has been thanks to mobile devices.

As of the third quarter of the year, they accounted for 96.9 million smart devices of which 41.9% are used, among other activities to play. From this, in Mexico there are 40.6 million video players from a mobile device.

While they are mostly games that do not have the development complexities that console and PC games are the ones that register a greater adoption and dynamic growth in the number of video players. This is how the market value of mobile video games in Mexico is estimated to amount to $1,910 million pesos during 2017.
