WTDC 2017 brings together 130 countries in Buenos Aires

Argentina. The World Telecommunication Development Conference, WTDC 2017, brings together delegations from more than 130 countries around the world. The event organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Ministry of Modernization held its opening ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, with the presence of the Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers, Marcos Peña; the Minister of Modernization, Andrés Ibarra; the Foreign Minister, Jorge Faurie; ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao; and itU-D head Brahima Sanou.

WTDC 2017, under the theme ICT for the Sustainable Development Goals, aims to adopt a common agenda to be met by 2030.

During the opening ceremony, the Chief of Cabinet, Marcos Peña, said: "We are convinced that a better world is a more connected world and, therefore, transformations have to reach all citizens. More inclusion and digital access is more freedom, democracy and transparency and that allows us to build towards that horizon. That's why we see technologies as positive tools."

For his part, the Minister of Modernization, Andrés Ibarra, said that "this is another step in the process that our President Mauricio Macri promotes on the construction of trust in the country, both inside and outside it. We aim to reduce the digital divide to progress and generate sustainable growth in the country."

ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao said: "We work to develop and strengthen inclusion, innovation, investment and infrastructure to strengthen telecommunication development. ICTs are key to improving people's lives. Together we are stronger and we must contribute to meeting the 2030 agenda." In addition, a message from Pope Francis was read, who highlighted the realization of the event in our country and highlighted the importance of communications in the world.

At the beginning of the conference, Miguel De Godoy, president of Enacom, and the members of the Board of Directors of the organization, along with other Ministers of the National Cabinet, were also present. During the rest of the day, a series of activities and talks will be held on different regulatory topics and in relation to the development of ICT in the world. National authorities will also participate in a series of bilateral meetings with international organizations.
