300 million Latinos pirate content monthly

Mexico. According to figures from the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel), in Chile illegal piracy remains a relevant problem for both the State and companies. If the growth of the pay TV industry was 10% subscribers between 2013 and 2014, in the period of 2015-2016 it is 3.5%.

The president of the CNTV and the Platform of Regulators of Ibero-America, (PRAI), Oscar Reyes, spoke about this reality at an International Congress of Anti-Piracy and Audiovisual Content held in Mexico City and as a regulatory platform seek measures to address the problem at the regional level.

"There are currently 16,000 pirate portals or pages that offer illegal content. 300 million Latin Americans watch television, the Internet and other audiovisual products irregularly on a monthly basis. That is, they pirate the contents of the authors or filmmakers who made those images," said Oscar Reyes.
The meeting, which brings together Latin American authorities, filmmakers, executives of television companies and other major audiovisual programmers, seeks to call on the governments of the region to take and promote more concrete measures in this regard.

"We have to call on governments, courts of law, parliaments, the television industry and the audiovisual content regulators themselves to worry about this crime that is affecting our Latin American society," said the president of the CNTV and the Regulators of Ibero-America.

The executive invited television companies and authorities to "organize and carry out awareness, education and information campaigns to publicize this crime that affects the cultural and social heritage of our countries."

Reyes said that we must be alert "because technology is much more advanced than laws and regulations and that implies establishing joint lines of work among all those affected by this crime."
