IFT presented the Telecommunications Information Bank

Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, made available to the public the Telecommunications Information Bank, BIT, which is an interactive tool to consult, analyze, explore and download the data from which the IFT monitors the development of the Telecommunications sector.

It was developed with a perspective of intelligence and business analysis to generate knowledge about the performance of telecommunications in Mexico, facilitate the decision-making of the different agents involved in the sector and strengthen the design of public policies on telecommunications.

The BIT is a portal that incorporates best practices in terms of open data and access to information and at the international level there is no precedent for a platform of this magnitude.

In the portal it is possible to consult information regarding the macroeconomic environment of telecommunications and broadcasting in Mexico, number portability, income and investment of operators, as well as indicators related to the different services such as fixed and mobile telephony, fixed and mobile broadband, and restricted television. It also has a data download module and a graphical explorer to perform custom queries, generate variables, perform complex sectoral analysis, build indicator boards and graphically analyze time series.

It is not necessary to have any type of software or specific hardware to navigate in the BIT, only a computer equipment with an internet connection is required. In addition, the information is available for download in open data format, placing the IFT at the forefront internationally in terms of transparency, open data and availability of information from regulated sectors.

It is a dynamic information platform, which is expected to evolve over time. In the medium term, it will continue the published tables with quarterly updates, in addition to validating the historical information to perform long-term analysis; incorporate new disaggregations that allow a better analysis of the data; and add unpublished information to date, such as marketing and packaging metrics, in order to monitor the convergence of telecommunications services.

The BIT is presented with the information corresponding to the fourth quarter of 2016, which includes indicators with a much higher level of disaggregation compared to previous quarterly statistical reports.

The tool was developed in SAS Visual Analytics, for the visualization and exploitation of data, recognized internationally and used in sectors such as Banking or Insurance and Bonds. In Mexico, SAS is used by Mexican institutions such as the Credit Bureau, the SAT or some areas of the Bank of Mexico. With the exception of the IFT, no public, private or international institution in the world has made the SAS graphic explorer available to the public free of charge.
