Mexico. During the fourth quarter of 2016, "Sector 51: Mass Media Information", represented by 94 percent by the Telecommunications and Broadcasting subsectors, registered an increase of 8.6 percent over the same period in 2015, while the national GDP grew 2.4 percent during the same period, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, INEGI.
According to the National Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, the report positioned this sector in first place in terms of growth rates, above other industrial sectors such as "52: Financial and insurance services", "11: Agriculture, animal husbandry and exploitation, forestry, fishing and hunting", "56: Business support services and waste management and remediation services", among others (see Figure 1).
At the subsector level, telecommunications, although they grew 9.2 percent while seven other subsectors grew at higher rates, all of them do not have the weight that Telecommunications have in GDP. For example, the air transport, construction, film and video industries subsectors recorded annual growth rates of more than 14 percent; however, the weight of these activities in the national economy does not represent more than 1.0 percent, while telecommunications make up 3.5 percent of the national GDP.
The full name of subsector 517 is Other Telecommunications, made up of the telecommunications markets regulated by the IFT. Only the subsectors with the highest annual growth rate are included.
This is evidence of the dynamism that Telecommunications have had during the last years derived from the constitutional reform. In fact, at the end of the third quarter of 2016, this subsector was positioned in the 8th place of participation in the national GDP. By the end of 2016, telecommunications rose three places to fifth place.
