Brazil. Globosat is using Pebble Beach Systems' Marine automation system to expand its playout capacity during the Rio Olympics. This new expansion represents the largest and most comprehensive coverage of the Olympic Games delivered to the Brazilian public.
Eight new 24-hour linear channels, composed of 8 Main and 8 Backup channels totaling 16, are controlled with Marina, in addition to providing OTT signals from these same channels. On-demand content is also available, so viewers can catch up on new records they didn't see. With this increase in capacity, Globosat expects to achieve 92% coverage of all Live TV Olympic events and 100% coverage of OTT events, representing a milestone for the company.
"Our partnership with Pebble Beach Systems has given us great confidence in our playout solution given the size and complexity of the additional infrastructure we are implementing for the Rio Olympics," said Fabricio Faria Santana, Project Analyst at Globosat. "Thanks to our partners, we have innovated a lot, doubling our production capacity for simultaneous live events."
Globosat uses Pebble's Marine system for automated intake and playout control, as well as workflow management and content management. Pebble Beach Systems' distributor in Brazil, Videodata, supplied the solutions for Globosat, along with Harmonic's ChannelPort video servers and Vizrt's Opus graphics systems. Videodata was responsible for the development, implementation and support for channel expansion, as well as all system updates.
Pebble Beach Systems products are in charge of two distinct functions:
1. Sequencing and control of the 8 linear channels - Pebble's Marine automation system controls the 8 sets of channels (main and backup) from Harmonic's ChannelPort Servers. These systems are working most of the day receiving live content of events through a Vizrt Opus system including the insertion of the channel logo.
During the night, Marina automation takes full charge of the display of the repetitions, sequencing the material previously transferred to the Storage of the ChannelPorts, and also adding a channel logo.
2. Fan Fest OBs - Globosat uses main channels and backup through Pebble Beach Systems' Dolphin integrated playout system (CiaB) to generate signals from the OB truck on the Rio Fan Fest stage. A "Beauty Cam" power signal is inserted into Globosat's linear channel via the Dolphin playout system.
"The control of the ChannelPort with Marina simplifies the playout chains, replacing them with a single device, without renouncing the advantages of the interface of our current automation system," said Luiz Cláudio Costa, Technology Development Specialist at Globosat. "Equally important, Marina makes the change transparent from an operational standpoint."
Pebble's Marine systems are controlling Globosat's 16 sports TV channels, of which 8 are channels from a previous project.
