Pay-TV will reach 5.3 million households in Colombia 2018

Colombia. The Colombian Pay-TV market will reach 5.3 million households (HHs) in 2018, according to data published by Dataxis. This figure will represent an increase of 3.4% when compared to the end of 2015.

According to the new report "Pay-TV Series 2015: Colombia", households with cable Pay-TV services will include 64.8% of total Pay-TV households in Colombia in 2015. Dataxis estimates that cable will continue to be the main access technology in 2018, although its market penetration will decrease over the years.

In this sense, DTH networks will increase their penetration, rising from 30% in 2015 to 34.9% in 2018, while IPTV will grow from 5.2% in 2015 to 7.4% in 2018.

Although Colombia is the country with the fourth largest base of Pay-TV subscribers in Latin America, penetration in legal Pay-TV households will remain relatively low, at 40.9% by the end of 2015. Dataxis believes that the proportion of households with legal Pay-TV will fall to 39.3% by 2018.

At the end of Q2 2015, the América Móvil group – owner of Claro TV – will dominate the market with a share of 43%, followed by AT&T (DirecTV) with 21.5%. In a close third place is the Colombian company UNE, with 20.3% of the Pay-TV market. Telefónica (Movistar TV) is fourth with only 8.9% of the market.

Finally, Dataxis estimates that total Pay-TV revenue will reach USD884 million by 2018, with a total ARPU (Average Revenue per User) of USD13.89. DTH services will generate 50.9% of total revenue, CATV operations will account for 43.7% and IPTV the remaining 5.4%.

Most of the companies that compete for this business will participate in the NexTV Summit Colombia 2015 that Dataxis organizes at the Royal Hotel in Bogotá on November 18 and 19.
